Tricep Extension Machine

A triceps-extension machine provides external resistance while the user extends the elbow. It primarily trains the triceps brachii, but design, setup and available range vary by machine.
Definition and muscles
The triceps brachii is the main elbow extensor, assisted by the anconeus. A machine guides the resistance through its own geometry, but it does not eliminate all positioning or stability demands and is not automatically safer than other resistance tools. Machine design and upper-arm position affect the exercise.

Setup and technique
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and adjust the seat, pads and handles so the joints move comfortably with the machine. Keep the upper arm controlled and extend and return without using body momentum or dropping the stack. A full or long range can be useful when tolerated, but “full extension,” a 90-degree starting angle, a one-second squeeze and a 2–3 second return are not universal requirements. Stop or modify the exercise if it causes joint pain.

Training effect and dosage
Progressive resistance training can improve strength, endurance and muscle size. Different loads can support hypertrophy when effort and volume are sufficient, while heavier loads generally favor maximal-strength gains. There is no universal requirement for 12–15 repetitions, three sets, a moderate load or one to two weekly isolation sessions. Select load, repetitions, sets and frequency from the goal, experience, other pressing work and recovery.

HYROX® relevance
HYROX® includes SkiErg, Sled Push and Wall Balls, but the current rules describe tasks rather than muscle-isolation requirements. Elbow extension contributes to many upper-body actions, yet no direct evidence reviewed here shows that this machine improves HYROX® performance, fixes an early station failure or should replace practice of the actual station skill. It is optional accessory work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the machine necessary for HYROX®?
No. It may be used to train elbow-extension capacity, but direct race-skill practice and the athlete’s overall program determine whether it adds value.

Which repetitions should I use?
Use a load and repetition range that match the intended strength, endurance or muscle-size goal while maintaining controlled, comfortable technique; no single range is mandatory.
