Low-intensity aerobic training at 60-70% of max heart rate. Builds the endurance base critical for HYROX running segments.

Zone 2 training is low-intensity aerobic exercise at 60-70% of maximum heart rate — a conversational pace that builds the endurance foundation every HYROX performance depends on. Despite feeling easy, Zone 2 drives mitochondrial growth, improves fat oxidation, and enhances recovery between stations.

Zone 2 is model-dependent

“Zone 2” does not mean one universal heart-rate percentage. A three-zone model, a five-zone watch model and laboratory thresholds divide intensity differently. Fixed percentages of maximum heart rate can misclassify individuals. State the model you use and treat device labels as estimates.

How to identify an easy aerobic effort

A practical easy-aerobic session usually allows steady breathing and comfortable short sentences. The talk test can help locate intensity relative to ventilatory threshold, but it is not a laboratory measurement and can be affected by heat, hills, fatigue, medication and inaccurate maximum-heart-rate settings. Pace or power should remain subordinate to the intended effort.

Why it can help HYROX® preparation

Easy aerobic work can add running or machine volume at a manageable intensity and support endurance development. The small HYROX® study found aerobic-fitness associations in a simulated race, but it does not establish a required Zone 2 dose, a universal finish-time effect or that aerobic capacity is every athlete’s main limiter. Strength, movement skill, pacing and recovery also matter.

Plan it around total load

Use easy sessions alongside harder running, strength and station practice. The correct weekly share depends on training history, event proximity, recovery and injury risk. There is no evidence that every athlete must spend a fixed 60–80% of time in Zone 2 or complete a fixed number of 45–90 minute sessions.

Progress and monitor

Increase duration or frequency gradually, usually one main variable at a time. Track effort, symptoms, recovery and whether the same route or power becomes easier under comparable conditions. Heart rate can drift, so a rising value does not automatically mean the session failed. Reassess zones when fitness, conditions or measurement method changes.

Safety

Stop exercise for chest pain, faintness, unusual severe breathlessness or loss of control and seek appropriate care. People with relevant symptoms, disease or major risk changes should use individual medical guidance. Adjust impact and modality for injury rather than forcing a heart-rate target.

Frequently asked questions

What heart rate is Zone 2?

It depends on the zone model and individual thresholds; one percentage is not valid for everyone.

Jamnick et al. training-intensity-zone review

Can I use the talk test?

Yes, as a practical estimate of manageable intensity, with environmental and individual limits.

Talk test validation study

How much Zone 2 should I do?

Use an amount that fits total training, recovery and current capacity; no universal quota applies.

Does Zone 2 guarantee a faster HYROX® time?

No. It can support aerobic development, while race performance has multiple determinants.

Can I use a bike or rower?

Yes for aerobic work, while running-specific preparation still requires appropriate running exposure.
