Farmers Carry combines gripping two weights with walking under load. Finger flexors, trunk and hip muscles have different roles; anatomy alone does not rank their contribution to race performance.

Hands and shoulder girdle

The finger flexors include flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus. Brachioradialis primarily flexes the elbow; it is not a finger flexor. Trapezius and rhomboids help position the shoulder blades. Latissimus dorsi acts on the upper arm, so it should not simply be described as another rhomboid performing the same scapular action. These are anatomical functions, not a measured ranking of muscle effort during a carry.

Trunk and lower body

Trunk and hip muscles participate in loaded carrying. The quadriceps extend the knee; gastrocnemius and soleus contribute to plantarflexion. Gluteus medius and gluteus minimus are distinct muscles. Walking involves movement, so describing every participating muscle as continuously isometric throughout the entire carry is inaccurate.

What the evidence can show

McGill and colleagues measured muscle activity and spinal motion and estimated loading in three male strongman competitors, including during farmers and suitcase carries. This is evidence about exercise demands, not proof that Farmers Carry is the best core exercise, that grip always fails first or that a particular supplementary routine prevents rests during HYROX®.

HYROX® context and practice

In Singles 2026/27, Farmers Carry is station 6, after six designated 1 km runs and five workout stations. It covers 200 m with two kettlebells: 16 kg each for Women Open, 24 kg each for Men Open and Women Pro, or 32 kg each for Men Pro. Resting the bells on the ground is permitted without moving them forward during the set-down. As an optional practice task, use a manageable load and controlled pickup and set-down, adapting distance and rests to your ability. There is no fixed ten-to-twenty-second cost for every rest established by the rulebook.

FAQ

Which muscle is the main limiter?

The cited anatomy and small biomechanical study do not establish one universal limiting muscle for HYROX® athletes. Distinguish the ability to grip from trunk control and walking performance instead of assuming that all difficulties have the same cause.

Can I use chalk during Farmers Carry?

The 2026/27 Singles rules allow only event-provided chalk, at Farmers Carry and Sled Pull. Using your own chalk, removing it from those stations or using it elsewhere incurs a two-minute penalty. Chalk use does not make an unbroken carry mandatory; rests remain allowed.

Do carries train the trunk?

Loaded carries impose demands on trunk muscles. That does not demonstrate superiority to every other exercise or identify a mandatory programme of side planks, shrugs and Pallof presses. ACSM’s general guidance supports matching resistance training to individual goals and capacity.
