Grip endurance is the ability to sustain or repeat gripping effort over time. It differs from the maximum force produced in a brief squeeze.

Strength and endurance are different measurements

Grip endurance describes maintaining or repeating gripping effort over time. Maximal grip strength describes the greatest force in a brief effort. Research uses both sustained and repeated-contraction tests to assess endurance, so a single maximal squeeze does not give the same information. Comparisons need the same test and load.

Relevance to HYROX® Singles

In Singles 26/27, Farmers Carry covers 200 m with two kettlebells: 16 kg each for Women Open, 24 kg each for Men Open and Women Pro, and 32 kg each for Men Pro. Sled Pull is 50 m in four 12.5 m lengths, not a 50 m rope. SkiErg and rowing are each 1,000 m. These tasks involve gripping, but their distances do not establish a universal number of strokes or prove that grip fails first in every athlete. Brief maximal-handgrip testing in a simulated HYROX® study did not measure rope-grip endurance.

Plan manageable grip practice

As a coaching option, practise a manageable carry with secure equipment and record load, distance and pauses. Set the weights down under control before you lose your grip; do not make dropping them the target. Adjust practice to your existing workload. Current ACSM guidance favours individualised resistance training and does not require momentary failure for every healthy adult. It does not validate a HYROX®-specific prescription of three to five minutes of hanging, heavier-than-race carries or a fixed 48-hour interval that eliminates tendon risk.

FAQ

How long does grip endurance take to improve?

These sources do not establish a universal three-to-four-week improvement or six-to-eight-week race benefit. Compare your own performance using the same task and conditions; a measurement study is not a training trial.

Can I use lifting straps in HYROX®?

For Singles 26/27, unlisted accessories are prohibited unless approved in writing by the Race Director before the start. Lifting straps are not listed as permitted equipment; allowed gloves are explicitly distinguished from grips. This is a competition rule, not a blanket ban on straps in all gym training.
