HRV describes variation between successive heartbeats. Consistent measurements can add context to a training log, but do not certify recovery.

What HRV measures

Heart-rate variability describes variation in time between successive heartbeats. Metrics such as RMSSD and frequency-domain measures are not interchangeable, and values depend on device, recording length, posture, breathing and time of day. Higher is not universally better across people.

How to use it

Interpret trends from repeated measurements under similar conditions alongside symptoms, sleep and training load. Illness, alcohol, stress and measurement noise can affect a reading. Reviews suggest possible modest benefits of HRV-guided endurance training in some outcomes, but a single value neither diagnoses overtraining nor mandates rest and does not guarantee performance.
