Negative Split

A negative split is a pacing strategy where the second half of a race is completed faster than the first. In HYROX, this means deliberately running later segments faster and completing later stations more efficiently, preserving energy early to finish strong when competitors fade.
Definition and comparison
A negative split means completing a comparable later portion faster than an earlier portion. The portions and timing convention must be defined: equal distance, equal duration or another valid division. Faster late speed does not automatically mean lower effort because terrain, wind and preceding work can differ.

HYROX® interpretation
HYROX® alternates eight runs with eight different stations, so first-half and second-half conditions are not identical. Compare official run splits with course layout, stations, transitions and penalties. A controlled start and strong finish may be a useful strategy for some athletes, but no universal percentage or split tolerance is optimal, and a negative split does not guarantee a faster overall result.
