Rolling start describes competitors being released successively rather than all at once. It should not be presented as the default procedure inside every HYROX wave. The official format and release instructions depend on the race.

A wave and an individual release are different

A wave is a scheduled starting group. The standard Singles and Doubles rules assign an official start time and require racers to follow that wave. They do not establish a universal rule releasing every athlete or pair at five- or ten-second intervals.

There is a specific 2026/27 Elite example: section 6.1 of the Singles rulebook says Elite Series Race 1 uses a waterfall format, releasing athletes individually at regular intervals. Races 2–5 use the Elite 15 Grid format. That season-specific provision does not make every Open, Pro or Doubles race a waterfall start.

Follow the release you are given

Check the official race guide, assigned time and start instructions. Assemble at the start tunnel ten minutes before the official start. If officials control individual releases, follow their signal; do not invent your own gap or choose a later group.

For Singles waves, section 7.2 of the Singles rulebook requires forward movement with the natural flow once the wave starts. Waiting in the tunnel for the course to clear may result in a penalty. Starting another wave without prior organiser approval leads to disqualification. See wave start.

What staggered timing does not promise

A timing chip records race timing; it does not remove time spent travelling, waiting or recovering after you start. Arriving at a station five seconds later is not automatically free merely because competitors started at different moments.

Do not infer a guaranteed congestion reduction, identical conditions or a fixed total wave-release duration from the phrase rolling start. For your own plan, identify the start procedure and the first run route, then follow the officials. In Doubles, partners must begin together.

Questions

Does every HYROX® wave use a rolling start?

No universal individual-release procedure is established for standard waves. Use the instructions for your race.

Is the interval always five to ten seconds?

No. The cited Elite waterfall provision gives regular intervals without establishing that numerical range for all races.

Can I wait for a clearer course before starting?

Do not hold back in the tunnel once your wave is moving. Follow the release instructions and assigned wave.
