A wave start sends scheduled groups into a HYROX race. Your official start time is assigned, communicated before race day and confirmed at check-in. Do not assume you can select or change it yourself.

Your assigned wave is the reference

The 2026/27 Singles and Doubles rules describe waves at regular scheduled intervals. Their example of ten minutes is not a promise that every event uses that interval. Check your official start information for the actual time and division.

Singles waves are grouped by division. In Doubles, both partners must be at the start line and begin together. One partner cannot start while the other arrives later. Check both registrations and make one shared arrival plan.

Work backwards from the start tunnel

You must assemble at the start tunnel ten minutes before your start time to receive official instructions. This is not the time to arrive at the venue entrance. Allow additional time for check-in, required identification, bag drop, finding the warm-up area and reaching the tunnel.

Use the event's opening hours and arrival instructions rather than a universal 45-minute arrival rule. Have your official start time clearly visible on your arm and wear the issued chip on an ankle.

If your plans change

Starting in an earlier or later wave without prior approval from the organisers leads to disqualification. Contact the event team about a problem; contacting them does not itself grant a change. If delayed on race day, seek instructions instead of joining a convenient group.

The Singles rulebook explicitly requires you to move forwards with the natural flow once your wave begins, rather than remaining in the start tunnel to wait for quieter stations. A wave is not automatically an individual rolling start, and chip timing does not erase delays during the race.

Questions

Can I choose a better wave on race day?

Not on your own. An earlier or later start requires prior organiser approval under the rules.

How many athletes are in a wave?

Use the event's information. The rules do not establish a universal 50–200 range.

When must I be at the start tunnel?

Ten minutes before your assigned start, with check-in and your other preparations already accounted for.
