Transition time describes movement between running and station work. These intervals contribute to the HYROX race total, including time spent navigating the Roxzone.

Where transitions happen

Each of the eight runs is followed by a station. After stations one to seven, you return to the running course. After the wall balls, you head to the finish rather than beginning a ninth run. A formula that assumes eight identical station-to-run exits misses this distinction.

The Roxzone connects the running and workout areas. Follow the designated entrances, exits and route for your event. Distances and layout affect the movement required, so a fixed “under ten seconds per transition” target is not a universal race standard.

Reading the timing report

Check whether the report provides a Roxzone or transition field and how its intervals are defined. Equipment setup or a pause may already lie within a station split. Do not add it again merely because you regard it as preparation rather than exercise.

Subtracting run and station totals from the overall result only isolates transition time if all fields cover separate intervals and penalties or other adjustments are accounted for. Otherwise the difference can include more than movement between stations. Use the official report and ask event support about missing or inconsistent readings.

Planning a legal route

Study the published course map and the officials' instructions. Identify the next station before leaving a run, use the correct arches and wait for assigned equipment. Do not enter the course before your assigned start: this can trigger your timing chip. Do not take a shortcut to improve a split.

In Doubles, both partners must enter a station together, begin only once both are present and leave together after completing the work. An individual sprint ahead is not a valid substitute for team coordination.

In training, you can rehearse approaching the equipment and moving back into running at a manageable effort. Review where you hesitated, while allowing the recovery you need. Any time saved depends on your own starting point and event layout; no fixed number of minutes is guaranteed.

FAQ

Are transitions included in the final time?

Yes. The race clock does not stop between running and station work.

Can I calculate transitions as the leftover time?

Only if the other fields are complete, non-overlapping and account for penalties. Otherwise the remainder is not a reliable transition measurement.

Must I start every station immediately without resting?

No general rule requires that. Plan execution within the movement and team rules, and adjust the effort to your ability rather than chasing an arbitrary transition target.
