Sled Pull for Beginners
Beginner’s guide to the HYROX Sled Pull: current Singles weights, four 12.5 m lengths, a practical learning progression and equipment alternatives.

Understand your first Sled Pull
In 26/27 Singles, Sled Pull is station 3, after run 3. You have completed three designated 1 km runs, SkiErg and Sled Push before reaching it. Sled Pull is one station of 50 m, divided into four 12.5 m lengths; it is not two separate 50 m efforts. Including the sled, Women Open pull 78 kg, Men Open and Women Pro 103 kg, and Men Pro 153 kg. The push and pull are separate stations with different load standards.

Learn the race boundaries
Use the assigned lane. Before starting, both you and the sled must be fully within your respective boxes. Pull standing, not sitting or kneeling. While holding the rope, do not step on the solid front or back line of the Racer’s Box. Keep the rope in your lane without obstructing another lane. The whole sled must cross the line on each length; then move to the other end. The station is complete after all four lengths and the final full crossing, not simply when the sled reaches your feet.

Try the hand-over-hand movement
For practice, choose a stable stance and a secure grip, draw the rope towards you, then reach with the other hand and repeat. Start with a load you can control and a comfortable reach. Coordinate the movement rather than treating the arms as passive hooks. These are coaching cues: the rulebook does not prescribe a 20–30° torso angle, a 45° gaze or one mandatory hook grip. Feeling a particular muscle is not a rulebook test of correct technique. Ask a coach to observe your position and rope handling if you are unsure.

Choose a usable starting load
Count the sled itself as part of total load. Centr lists its competition sled at 50 kg unladen. A proposed total of 25–30 kg is therefore impossible on that model, and 40% of the 78 kg Women Open total is 31.2 kg, also below its empty mass. If an empty sled is too demanding on your surface, choose a lighter suitable model or another pulling exercise. Do not force a percentage target that your equipment cannot provide. Sled type and surface also matter when comparing loads.

Progress by what you can control
An optional progression is: first practise a short controlled pull and a reset; next complete a marked 12.5 m length and change ends; later join lengths until you can rehearse the four-length format with an appropriate load. Allow recovery between attempts and repeat a stage when needed. Add load or distance to suit your response, rather than because a calendar says week 3 or week 6. You can reserve a practice slot in your plan and decide whether another fits alongside other training. This is a learning framework, not a validated four-to-six-week route to race readiness.

Train pulling without pretending it is the same station
A conventional cable row can be an option for general pulling work: ACE includes cable rows in back training. Use the attachment as designed rather than trying to feed a short cable handle through your hands like a long sled rope. Band resistance changes with elongation, as THERABAND explains, so it is not the same resistance as a sled on turf. Inspect bands for tears, abrasions and cracks, replace worn ones and follow the product’s attachment instructions. A cable or band exercise does not reproduce the competition box, long rope and sled surface. Practise those with suitable equipment when available.

Prepare for race day
Rehearse your approach, box position, complete crossings and changes of end. For a first race, make legal completion the priority and pause if needed to regain control; there is no verified universal 15–30-second cost for every pause. There is also no compulsory 70–75% starting effort in the rulebook. After the four lengths, run 4 leads to Burpee Broad Jumps. Further reading: Sled Pull technique, grip training and race tips.

Judge progress without a promised finish time
Record your equipment, total load, surface, length count, recovery and timing boundaries. Use comparable attempts to follow your own progress. The cited Cahill paper addresses sled work for sprint speed, and Girard reviews repeated-sprint fatigue. Neither establishes a guaranteed sub-three-minute result after eight weeks, a 30–90-second improvement at a second race, or a universal tendon-adaptation deadline for a three-times-weekly grip programme. Your training log is useful feedback, not a promise of a particular race time.

FAQ
How heavy is the Sled Pull in Open?
For Singles 26/27, Women Open use 78 kg and Men Open 103 kg, including the sled. The distance is four 12.5 m lengths.
HYROX® Singles26/27 · §1/4.1/8.2/8.3
What weight should I start with?
Choose a total load you can control on your equipment and surface. Include the empty sled: Centr lists its competition model at 50 kg, so a lower total needs a different setup.

Can a cable row replace all Sled Pull practice?
It can provide general pulling work, but it does not reproduce the long rope, sled surface and competition box. Use the cable attachment as intended and practise the race setup when available.

Must I finish the station without stopping?
Complete all four lengths legally. As a practical choice, pause when needed to regain control; keep the standing-pull and box rules when restarting. The cited research does not establish a fixed time cost for every pause.

How long will it take me to be ready?
These sources do not establish a universal four-to-six-week deadline. Progress according to control, recovery, available equipment and your wider training, with individual coaching where needed.
