Start with the correct station format

In the 26/27 Singles race, Sled Pull is station 3, after the third run. Complete 50 m as four 12.5 m lengths. The total loads, including the sled, are 78 kg for Women Open, 103 kg for Men Open and Women Pro, and 153 kg for Men Pro. Practise the changes of end as well as the pulling; a continuous 50 m pull is a different training setup.

Set up inside the box

Pull standing inside your assigned Racer’s Box. Sitting or kneeling is not permitted. While holding the rope, do not step on the solid lines at the front or back of the box. The rulebook does not prescribe a 20–30° torso angle or a 30–40 cm staggered stance. As a practice cue, choose a stable foot position and a comfortable reach that let you control the rope within these boundaries.

Practise a controlled hand-over-hand pull

Try this coaching sequence with a manageable training load: establish a secure grip, take up the slack under control, draw the rope towards you, then reach with the other hand and repeat. Coordinate your hands, trunk and legs rather than trying to isolate a single muscle group. These are practice cues, not a proven optimal sequence. Avoid chasing the longest possible reach or a fixed number of pulls. A side-on video can help you inspect your stance and line position; it does not establish a tenfold learning advantage.

Complete the length before changing ends

The entire sled must cross the line before you walk to the other end for the next length. Keep the rope in your own lane. It may extend behind the pulling area, but must not obstruct neighbouring lanes. Practise clearing your own working space and restarting from the opposite box. Complete all four lengths before leaving the station. This repeated sequence is the useful framework for race practice, rather than a single acceleration phase followed by an uninterrupted 15–40 m middle phase.

Respond to slipping without guessing the cause

If the rope slips during practice, pause and check your grip, rope condition, load and position before continuing. Treat these as checks, not a diagnosis that your grip has fallen to a particular percentage. No inspected source establishes that every athlete loses 40–60% of grip capacity at 40 m, or that briefly relaxing a hand adds 15–20 seconds of performance. Use a load you can control and allow recovery between attempts. If an exercise makes back pain worse, stop it and seek medical advice.

Chalk and rope equipment

The current Centr competition-rope product listing specifies a 38 mm diameter, not 50 mm; check the exact equipment you will use. Under the 26/27 Singles rules, only event-provided chalk is permitted, and only at Sled Pull and Farmers Carry. Using it elsewhere, bringing your own or removing it from the station incurs a two-minute penalty. Gloves are permitted; grip aids are not. Permitted accessories chosen for the race must be worn or carried from start to finish.

A practical technique session

An optional session can focus on one skill at a time: first practise the starting position with a manageable load; then complete a marked 12.5 m length; finally rehearse the crossing, walk to the other end and restart. Rest enough to assess each attempt. Record the total load, surface, completed distance and any loss of control. Progress only when appropriate for you. This is a coaching example, not a validated four-week programme or a requirement to train at 70–80% of race weight. For related reading, see Sled Pull grip and Sled Pull versus Push.

What the research supports

Cahill and colleagues’ 2019 article concerns sled pushing and pulling for sprint speed. The author’s thesis discusses resisted sprinting and waist or shoulder harness attachments. That work does not validate a fixed torso angle for HYROX® hand-over-hand pulling, doubled force from leg drive, a universal last-10-metre fatigue pattern or an exact race-time saving. Keep movement rules separate from individual coaching choices.

FAQ

What body position is compulsory?

You must pull standing within the Racer’s Box; sitting and kneeling are prohibited. The Singles rulebook does not impose a particular torso angle.

How heavy is the Sled Pull?

For 26/27 Singles, totals including the sled are 78 kg for Women Open, 103 kg for Men Open and Women Pro, and 153 kg for Men Pro. All complete four 12.5 m lengths.

Is there one best rope grip?

The inspected evidence does not establish one universally optimal hook grip or finger position for HYROX®. Practise a secure, controllable grip on the equipment you use; the current Centr product listing specifies a 38 mm rope.

Can I use chalk?

Only event-provided chalk, and only at Sled Pull and Farmers Carry. The Singles penalty appendix assigns two minutes for use elsewhere, bringing your own or removing chalk from the station.

How should I practise the change of end?

Pull until the whole sled crosses the line, then walk to the opposite end and set up for the next length. Keep the rope within your lane and avoid obstructing neighbouring lanes.
