Race Pace

Race pace is an individual effort plan for HYROX running segments; learn what current rules and research support and what must be tested personally.
Definition
Race pace is the planned speed or effort for competition. HYROX® Singles alternates eight 1 km runs with eight stations, so a useful plan must account for the whole event rather than treating the runs as an isolated 8 km time trial. Pace can be expressed in min/km, speed or perceived effort.

What current evidence shows
In a recent study of 24 male PRO athletes at one official event, running speed declined from run one to run eight; mean running-plus-Roxzone intensity was about 84% of each athlete’s second ventilatory-threshold speed. That small, division-specific cohort does not establish a universal heart-rate percentage, RPE, finish time, pace gap from a 5 km or 10 km, or segment-by-segment target for all athletes. Broader pacing research treats pacing as dynamic effort distribution influenced by experience and repeated exposure.

How to set and train pace
Start with your own recent race or representative simulation, review each run split alongside station performance and perceived effort, then test a conservative plan under similar conditions. Training may include controlled 1 km repetitions and run-to-station combinations, but volume, recovery, frequency and target pace must be individualised. Multiplying pace by eight estimates only the eight nominal run kilometres; it is not a complete finish-time prediction and may omit Roxzone distance.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is HYROX® race pace always below lactate threshold?
No universal threshold relationship has been established for every division and ability level. A recent male PRO cohort averaged below its laboratory VT2 speed, but individual and segment values varied.

Can I add 30–45 seconds to my 5 km pace?
That can be a personal starting hypothesis, not a validated universal conversion. Test it in representative sessions and revise it from actual splits and station quality.

Should all eight runs have the same pace?
Not necessarily. The recent PRO cohort slowed across the event, while pacing research shows effort distribution is dynamic. Use a plan that fits your capacity and adjust to conditions.
