The sled push combines leg work with trunk and upper-body support. Studies have measured activity in selected leg and trunk muscles; they do not establish a universal muscle-by-muscle share of pushing force.

Which muscles are involved?

The quadriceps extend the knee, the gluteus maximus extends the hip, and the calf muscles contribute to plantar flexion at the ankle. These anatomical actions help explain the leg movements involved in pushing. They are not a measurement of each muscle’s contribution during a HYROX® race.

What sled-push studies show

Maddigan and colleagues compared a maximum-load, 20-step sled push with a ten-repetition-maximum back squat in ten resistance-trained men. The measured calf muscle showed greater activity during the push, while the measured lower-back muscles showed greater activity during the squat. The experiment did not test race-time improvements.

A separate study of nine male rugby players used an instrumented treadmill, not a HYROX® carpet lane. Increasing push load increased activity in the measured quadriceps and calf muscles, but not significantly in the measured hamstring muscle. This does not isolate the effect of leaning farther forward.

Using this information in training

Treat muscle diagrams as orientation, not a diagnosis of your limiting muscle. Neither experiment establishes a complete training programme, an optimal body angle or a guaranteed transfer from squats to faster station times. As a coaching option, practise manageable sled pushes and record the setup, load and distance before comparing sessions.

The HYROX® station

In HYROX® Singles 26/27, the sled push is station 2, after the second run. The distance is 50 m: four lengths of 12.5 m. Loads include the sled: Women 102 kg; Women Pro and Men 152 kg; Men Pro 202 kg. The whole sled must cross the line before you change direction.

FAQ

Is it only a leg exercise?

No. The 2014 experiment also recorded trunk-muscle activity. It did not measure every upper-body muscle, so it cannot establish a complete ranking or a fixed percentage of force from the arms.

Does a burning sensation prove that my technique is wrong?

The cited experiments did not test that diagnostic claim. Do not use the sensation alone to infer an incorrect body angle or a specific weak muscle.

Can squats replace sled practice?

They can be a strength-training choice, but the acute squat comparison did not establish an equivalent replacement or a guaranteed HYROX® performance benefit.
